castle views

Walking up the hills in Lisbon to reach this castle was a suicide mission but I am pleased to say that I made it alive to the hilltop - it was a serious killer. The castle gardens and views are awesome, geese and ducks roam around the castle gardens and it was well worth the visit.

Along the way (upway should I say) we passed really gorgeous sites that made the whole uptown walk absolutely worth it.

The castle was once used as a fortress but now locals and tourists roam around relaxing, playing backgammon under the shady trees and enjoying the spectacular views over Lisbon and the Tagus river.

We climbed the towers and walked along the reconstructed ramparts of the castle walls.

Conquered by the Moors in 1147, Saint George Castle has an area of around 6000 square metres with several towers, look-outs, a dry moat and two squares divided by an internal wall with a connecting door.
